Interior Crawl Space Drainage That Captures Water Before It Pools
Epp Foundation Repair has built crawl space drainage systems across Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri since 1994.

What crawl space drainage is and when it's the right call.
Epp Foundation Repair excavates a 6-to-8 inch deep, 4-to-6 inch wide trench around the interior perimeter of the crawl space, just inside the foundation wall. Gravel goes in first, then 3-inch perforated PVC or HDPE pipe sloped to the lowest point. Low-profile drainage matting. A corrugated waffle-style panel. Sits on top of the gravel trench and extends up the wall 4 to 6 inches, creating a channel that catches water seeping through wall-floor joints before it reaches the open crawl. The pipe terminates in a sump pit (typically an 18-gallon basin set into the dirt floor) with a primary submersible pump rated for the inflow rate. The pump discharges through a check valve to a code-compliant exterior outlet at least 10 feet from the foundation. Unlike basement drainage, crawl space installation has to work around limited clearance, existing HVAC ducts, plumbing, and structural piers. Epp Foundation Repair routes around all of them without disrupting service.
How we install crawl space drainage.
Locate Sump Pit Position and Map Perimeter Route
Epp Foundation Repair identifies the lowest point in the crawl space and the shortest discharge run to an exterior outlet that meets local code. The sump pit goes at the low point; the perimeter pipe slopes 1/8 inch per foot toward it. Ductwork, plumbing penetrations, and piers are mapped so the trench route avoids structural and mechanical conflicts.
Excavate Perimeter Trench in Dirt Floor
Crews dig a 6-to-8 inch deep, 4-to-6 inch wide trench around the interior perimeter using hand tools and short-handle shovels (crawl clearance does not allow standard excavation equipment). Spoils are bagged and removed; the trench is graded to maintain consistent slope toward the sump location.
Install Gravel Base and Perforated Pipe
Washed drainage gravel (3/4 inch minus) goes in 1 to 2 inches deep. Three-inch perforated PVC or HDPE pipe is laid with perforations facing down so silt does not enter the pipe immediately. Pipe joints are coupled tight, and the slope is checked with a laser level before the pipe is locked in with additional gravel.
"The mistake I see most often is a homeowner who paid a handyman to drop a sump pump in the middle of the crawl. Water still has to cross the whole dirt floor to reach it. The perimeter matting catches it right where it comes through the wall. That's the difference between a system that works and a pit full of standing water."

Crawl Space Access Well
Epp Foundation Repair installs below-grade access wells that keep your crawl space entrance from collecting water, soil, and debris. A clean opening makes inspections, repairs, and routine checks far easier.
Learn moreProprietary Solutions
Not every crawl space needs the same parts. Epp Foundation Repair installs engineered, brand-name systems for encapsulation, drainage, and support, then matches the pieces to what your crawl space actually has wrong. The point is the right system, not the fanciest label.
Learn moreControlling Moisture
Epp Foundation Repair has diagnosed and corrected crawl space moisture across Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri since 1994.
Learn moreCrawl Space Doors
An encapsulated crawl space is only as tight as its access point. Epp Foundation Repair installs sealed, insulated access doors that close off the entry where moisture, pests, and cold air sneak back in.
Learn moreCrawl Space Jacks
Bouncy, sloping floors usually trace back to overspanned or weakened framing in the crawl space below. Epp Foundation Repair sets adjustable steel jacks on engineered footings to carry the load and stop the movement. Our goal is permanent stabilization, with some lift possible depending on conditions.
Learn moreCrawl Space Ventilation
Open foundation vents were supposed to dry out crawl spaces. In our humid Midwest summers they often do the opposite. Epp Foundation Repair sets up the right moisture control for your crawl space, which usually means sealing and conditioning the air rather than venting it.
